Freeks and Geeks

Freaks and Geeks is a TV series of one season only produced by James Franco, Seth Rogan, and Jason Segel in 1999. But the story was happening in the 1980s. You think it is like a normal YA Movie, a story ready to tell us boring cheerleaders how to fall in love with Jock. They sit in boring terrace, talking about boring words, but lasted less than two seconds, the camera pulled down to some of the characters below the terrace. They are the protagonists of the series. They listened to Led Zepplin, ACDC, The Sex Pistol, and Ozzy Osbourne, wearing bell-bottoms, military jackets, and the vest revealing 1/9 arm, and driving their broken car and romping.

Freaks and Geeks (1999)是James Franco、Seth Rogan還有Jason Segel在1999的影集。但故事背景是發生在1980年代，只有一季。在第一季的片頭，你以為像是普通的YA電影一樣，準備告訴我們無聊的拉拉隊員怎麼跟Jock談戀愛的故事，他們坐在無聊的看台、講著無聊的話，但持續沒兩秒，鏡頭往下拉，拉到看台下方的幾個人物，啊，原來他們才是影集的主角，他們聽Led Zepplin、ACDC、The Sex Pistol、Ozzy Osbourne，穿喇叭褲、軍用夾克、露出1/9手臂的背心，開著破車鬧他們的玩笑。

Bad Reputation Its opening credit song is the very popular Bad Reputation by Joan Jett in 1981. “I don't give a damn about my reputation” first showed the appearance of this series. I think Freaks and Geeks is a rare rough and true; it is not perfect, but distorted, and to put it bluntly, it is a story about the freaks most in the dark corner of a high school in Detroit enjoy themselves quietly. After seeing the classic YA movies from 90’s to 2000: Mean Girls, Clueless, She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, She's The Man, and Never Been Kissed, Grease, we thought it was the mode of operation of the universe: young boys and girls falling for each other at the first sight and football star fell in love with nerds. Those stories of Cinderella are in fact not likely to happen, and the Freaks and Geeks tell you so. It is very realistic and cruel, because those creative illusions cannot happen. It tells you the beauty of emotional realism.

片頭曲是Joan Jett在1981年紅透半邊天的「Bad Reputation」“I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation.”先拋出這個影集的模樣，我覺得Freaks and Geeks就是難得一見的粗糙跟真實，他不完美、歪曲，講難聽一點就是在這個底特律某所高中裡最不見日光的那種怪咖自己跟自己玩的故事。看遍90年代到2000年經典的YA電影：Mean Girls、Clueless、She's All That、10 Things I Hate About You、She's The Man、Never Been Kissed、Grease，你一來我一往的曖昧火花，橄欖球明星愛上書呆子，我們以為這就是宇宙運行的模式。這些灰姑娘的故事事實上根本不太可能真的發生，Freaks and Geeks就是這麼告訴你了，很寫實，很殘酷，因為之前那些創造性的幻想寫實終究無法發生，他告訴你的是情緒寫實主義的美麗。

Emotional Realism

從May Ien Ang在1985年研究朱門恩怨（Dallas）這個影集開始，就在思考為什麼逃避性的愉悅（evasion pleasure）真的存在，她甚至提出警告，解讀說「逃避」這兩個字本身就存在著值得爭論的觀點，因為他指的是真實與幻想的嚴格區分。

逃避到一個虛構世界去世與拒絕接受真實不同的，它毋寧是一種遊戲人間的心理，是一種介於真實與虛構世界之間的流動狀態（fluid）。而閱聽人在這樣的遊戲裡，透過想像，參與於虛構世界中，藉以獲得愉悅（pleasurable）（ Ang，1985:49）

在我看來，在電視劇裡面遊走的人絕對不是活在所謂虛幻世界的。因為透過閱讀任何文本獲得的喜悅，絕對是真實的，並非幻覺，因為電視劇被視為生活一部分，絲毫不假，無法反駁，參與於encoder的虛構世界當中，用積極的情感互動使文本更貼既人類現實社會經驗的意義，得到社會一般性的長久感動。

Freaks and Geeks在情緒寫實（emotional realism）的表現非常突出，他找到了很多觀眾可以跟角色心裏反應相當的情緒、情感共同點，儘管創造出來的角色跟我們很不一樣，我們不是那樣像Lindsay一樣聰明絕頂、我們不像Marvel電影裡的人有絕無僅有的超能力，但是我們都擁有一些人類基本的特質，我們可以感受生而為人極痛苦跟悲傷，可以感受愛的能量，會哭跟笑。我們經歷了寫實，會自動將注意力從文本敘述單一事件的特定性，轉移到主題的一般性，看到自己，然後看到更大的世界，學著去讓自己快樂，因為他們看起來是快樂的。

Freaks and Geeks只有一季，在美國2000年就禁播，有人謠傳是因為太真實了。畢竟有時候看這些電影影集是想要把自己丟進一個可以逃避的洞，但Freaks and Geeks一反常態，只是讓我們感受到現實的重量，搧了我們幾巴掌，告訴我們面對吧！這就是人生。有時候看到角色們尷尬的表情、瘋狂的舉動、讓人發窘的話語，幫他們捏一把冷汗時，還想要跳進電視劇安慰他們，總覺得看到自己的影子，或看到自己的朋友在校園走廊不知所措的模樣。

We Don't Need An Answer 演出普通人的生活的糾葛跟平淡，還有那些一看就懂的瑣事，模糊現實與虛構的那條線，你說不清是真是假，我們不求甚解的，就像是所有的freaks一樣活得很隨便，像是所有的geeks一樣放棄追問生活的答案了。但也沒關係，因為I don't have to give a damn about my reputation。是不是啊？
